National Lighthouse Day

National Lighthouse Day was celebrated at the Cape St. George Light on August 7.

The Cape St. George Light was decked out in festive attire for National Lighthouse Day, unofficially observed on August 7. About 150 people celebrated by climbing the lighthouse on that day.

The day was officially set aside to honor our nation's lighthouses only once, on August 7, 1989. That day was the 200th anniversary of the federalization of America's lighthouses. Congress in 1989 passed legislation honoring the First Public Works Act of the First Congress of the United States, which on August 7, 1789 put all lighthouses under federal control.

Timothy Harrison, editor and publisher of Lighthouse Digest magazine, is spearheading a campaign to have August 7 permanently designated as National Lighthouse Day every year going forward. He has asked Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine to sponsor this legislation, and urges all lighthouse lovers to contact their U.S. Senators and request their support for the declaration of August 7 as National Lighthouse Day.
